Terri believes that this is an important time in the future of Farmington and San Juan County, and that collaborating with the City of Farmington and Four Comers Economic Development is crucial for San Juan County.
Since the Public Service Company of New Mexico/PNM bailed out on Farmington and San Juan County citizens, it's important that the County and City continue to work together to preserve jobs and attract industries that will provide new opportunities for individuals and families in our community.
FREIGHT RAIL SERVICE. A Four Corners Freight rail line will be a catalyst for economic development in San Juan County and the surrounding area, including the Navajo Nation. The line will make the region more competitive by lowering shipping costs, which will be attractive to businesses looking to relocate or expand to our area. A feasibility study began in September 2022 and will continue through this year. The rail line will run between San Juan County to Gallup toward the I-40 corridor. Terri will continue to support this initiative.
SUPPORTING THE FILM INDUSTRY. In the 2019 legislative session, our local legislators were able to bring a million dollars back to San Juan County to improve the film industry in Farmington and San Juan County. This has the potential to bring a lot of dollars into Farmington and San Juan County in a short period of time. Farmington and San Juan County will continue to recruit more movie producers to come to Farmington and San Juan County to spend their money here and provide jobs.
In 2023 during Terri's current term, San Juan County completed the film back lot which includes approximately a half dozen buildings and façades that can be transformed according to a director's desires. Working with San Juan College professor, Luke Renner, and the state's film department, San Juan County is ready for the film industry. There's a 40% New Mexico State film rebate for any filming in San Juan County, which exceeds the rebate amount for movies produced in the Albuquerque and Santa Fe area.
